This plate is made of straw with red and blue details, and bears a woven decoration in the shape of a star. It was made by Venezuelan or Colombian refugees in Colombia or Mexico. It is a 2018 product of Made51.

Forced displacement is expected to rise in the Americas as the root causes – violence, insecurity, inequality and human rights violations – persist. There are more than 20 million forcefully displaced people with protection needs in the Americas, including refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons.

Made51

Whenever refugees flee their homes, they leave behind their jobs, their livelihoods and prospects. They do however take with them their incredible artisan skills, traditions and cultural heritage, often passed down from generations. Made51 is an online platform with refugee-made products for sale. The platform was created by UNHCR to connect refugees with social enterprise partners to design, produce and market artisanal products around the world. 1951 is the year of the adoption of the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
