1923-2023: Stories of Forced Displacement

For its second year, theBasketGallery is organizing two exhibitions looking into forced displacement- past and present.
More and more people continue to be uprooted from their homes through the world. The causes that force people’s displacement are interconnected through systematic human rights violations.
The year 2022 marked the 100 years since the 1922 Minor Asia Catastrophe. 2023, in turn, marks the 100th anniversary of the Lausanne Treaty between Greece and Turkey and the commencement of one of the largest population exchanges between the two countries. At the same time, 2023 is the year recording the highest ever number of refugees and internally displaced persons globally, since 1945.

Glittering diamonds and magic straws

Clothes, shoes, hats, bags and other apparel items are important (*). They accompany us in public and in private, they are with us through the best and the worst moments of our existence, right at our side. We need them, we desire them, we offer them, we use them, we toss them aside, we repair them and reuse them. But it is our interaction with them – at all levels – that gives them different meanings and an experience that can shape, transform and portray us. Hence, this exhibition is to honor and highlight the importance of these objects.
