According to the UNHCR Global Trends Report for 2022, the Least Developed Countries-46 countries that account for less than 1.3 per cent of global domestic product-are responsible for hosting more than 20 per cent of all refugees in the world. Specifically, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have received 1 in 5 of all refugees globally, with Uganda hosting 1,463,500 people by the end of 2022.

War and violence in South Sudan as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo paired with economical, social and political instability has led to a great number of refugees seeking shelter in Uganda.

About 50% of refugees in the country are located in Bidi Bidi, Pagirinya and Rhino refugee settlement camps at the northwest. Uganda has relatively friendly policies towards asylum seekers and at least aims at providing them with education-most refugees there are children-work, healthcare and some basic social services.

Although the newcomers are treated with hospitality, many are sick and injured from their journey, putting further strain on the country’s already poor healthcare system. Furthermore, refugees were initially given some plots of land in order to feed themselves and provide for their family, but the state cannot do so anymore, making this a critical situation.
