This bowl is made of wicker and was crafted by Syrian refugee women who work alongside local women in the Altinuzu women’s cooperative in Hatay, Turkey, in 2022.
The devastating earthquakes of February 2023 hit Turkey’s southeast part affecting a total of 15 million people, including 1,7 million Syrian refugees living there. The earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people heavily affected the provinces of Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Malatya and Adiyaman.
Turkey hosts close to 4 million refugees and asylum-seekers, including 3,3 million Syrian refugees. It has been the largest refugee-hosting country worldwide for more than ten years.
