IN PRAISE OF DESSERT FASHION

Omani female headdresses were made from woven goat or camel leather straps. Each cap was individally crafted for a specific person alone. The bottom part often included a row of silver cylindric ornaments on the sides (nasal/mashl al-Ras), like the ones in the photo from the National Museum of Oman.

Sometimes, the silver ornamets were overlaid with gold. The allusion of the ornaments’ design to berries and leaves is suggestive of fertility and prosperity. The headdress was worn on special occasions by women of central and northern Oman (e.g. Bidiyah and areas in the Wahiba Sands). When worn, the headdress itself might also have been covered by a fine-mesh see-through black head shawl. It was sometimes combined with a similarly constructed leather collar.

Such elaborate works are reminiscent of, among others, sophisticated African hairstyles and Byzantine head ornaments that might have inspired stylists, fashion- but also costume-designers in the film industry,In the 2021 movie Dune, the headgear worn by lady Jessica (Rebecca Fergusson) when House Atreides first arrives on Arrakis echoes the splendor seen in African and oriental dresses. According to some sources it might be the most expensive movie costume ever made. (Picture credited to Warner Bros). .
